Shining Star

smiling star

At the LBUSD Board of Education meeting on January 27th, Emerson was proud to be awarded a 2009 STAR Award (Student Success + Terrific Teaching = Academic Results).  Emerson received this wonderful recognition because students made significant growth in our Academic Performance Index (API), significant growth in our Annual Yearly Progress (AYP), and positive achievement gains in all areas once again on our Spring 2009 standardized tests. Read the full announcement on the district's website.

The combination of Emerson teachers and students working hard to achieve high levels of academic achievement and the dedication of parents and families helps to keep Emerson a shining "STAR"!

It's Fall, It's Fun

As Emerson students were busy learning in classrooms across the campus this fall, there were many schoolwide activities brewing. Our annual “Trunk or Treat” celebration gave students a chance to dress up in a costume, view some nicely decorated trunks by parents and get some yummy goodies too!

The day after our “Trunk or Treat” festivities, a delicious pancake breakfast, “garage” sale, and an electronic waste drive all competed to do the most good for our school. The pancake breakfast consisted of a delicious breakfast of pancakes, sausage and juice. For the garage sale Emerson families donated thousands of eclectic items, fetching great prices that directly help our school. Lots of community members also took advantage of our electronic waste drive - helping both the environment and Emerson! All of these events helped to raise vital funds for our school and, more importantly, we all had fun participating in a cause close to all our hearts.

And, last but not least, our book fair was incredibly successful. In fact, it was so successful that the principal had to follow up on a promise to kiss a pig if the school got over 2,000 books into the hands of our students, which we did! And, the principal did indeed give “Penny the Pig” a kiss. It was a first for Mr. Andreatta, but well worth it to celebrate the achievement of Emerson’s students!

As if that wasn’t enough, students also participated in our annual Red Ribbon assembly. Students were reminded to make healthy choices and to avoid drugs. Students donned red clothing that day and proudly wore their “Proud to be Drug-Free” bracelets.

The Emerson staff appreciates our dedicated and involved parents and extended families who support our school in so many ways throughout the year. We are endlessly grateful for all the support we receive from all of them. Their support and enthusiasm is what keeps us so great!

Emerson Art Festival

The Emerson campus came alive with art, music and dance on a recent Saturday morning. Our awesome PTA organized an art festival for our students and families to participate in and enjoy.  The festivities began with MOLAA (Museum of Latin American Art) guiding and encouraging Emerson students to help paint a fantastic school mural titled Dancing to the Rhythm of Latin Music and even features the silhouettes of Emerson students!

Performances included a puppet show by The Long Beach Shakespeare Company, the Long Beach Steel Drum School band and local performing group Long Beach Caravan Trio. Later in the day Los Aquilos Folklorico Dance Group treated the audience to a wonderful performance as well. There were community booths, lots of food, and even a sidewalk chalk art contest. A performance by Miss Chris rounded out a day full of art and culture. We're already looking forward to this event full of art, culture and community next year!

Emerson's Back To School Activities

The first few weeks of a new school year are always busy ones at Emerson! This year’s Back to School Night was a very well-attended event, with the vast majority of our parents coming to our campus to visit their child’s teacher. Parents learned about classroom expectations, routines, content to be taught, homework policies, and much more!

Soon after, our Back to School “Bash” was another well attended event but was all about fun. This was a time for students and parents to come and celebrate the beginning of the school year. There were games for the kids, plenty of food, community informational booths and vendors, and even a movie under the stars. This event was attended by hundreds of parents and students who were able to enjoy and relax under a beautiful, almost full moon. Thanks to everyone in attendance!

Emerson Celebrates Learning

Over 1,000 parents and family members recently participated in Emerson's Open House.  Many grade-specific study projects, writing samples, and works of art were on full display in classrooms throughout the school.  And, our cafeteria was filled with over 300 interesting and informative science fair projects - Emerson's students worked very hard and it showed!  Teachers also put in a tremendous effort to make their classroom environments highlight the creativity and learning that happens here each and every day.  Emerson parents, students and families seemed to truly enjoy our evening of celebration!

Parents' Night Out

Parents, teachers and friends of Emerson all joined together on a recent Saturday night to take part in the PTA's Mardi Gras themed Parents' Night Out event.  This year's event was held at the beautiful Long Beach Yacht Club.  Everyone in attendance had a great time participating in a variety of the night's events including a silent auction, casino games, a delicious dinner and live musical entertainment.  All the proceeds from this amazing night out go directly towards supporting Emerson school programs.

1st Annual Community Kickball Game

Emerson hosted its first annual kickball tournament on January 9th.  Parents who joined in got quite a workout but had a blast playing! Along with the tournament, car enthusiasts brought their cars to show them off for all to enjoy.  And, a group of crafters gathered to show off a unique variety of their wares.  All in all, everyone enjoyed the beautiful day and had a great time.  Emerson… a great place for kids, and the adults have fun, too!
